Gray.
I was waiting for you, all along.
But you weren’t waiting for me. I was your second choice, your perfect back-up plan, the one who would always, always come running when your world was crumbling apart, when all you thought you had you lost. I was the one you could never lose. I waited for you when you couldn’t find your words, and I finished your sentences like I thought I completed you.
But I wasn’t the one you looked at like nothing else mattered. I wasn’t the one who painted your world in colours so brilliant they made your face glow just talking about me, and I wasn’t the one you smiled with, with the kind of open, naked smile that lays your heart bare to the world. I wasn’t the last thing you thought about before you fell asleep, or the first face in your mind when you opened your eyes.
Beside her, I fade to a mere shade of gray, one that melts into the background like the rest of the world does when you look at her. Like she was the one you were waiting for all your life, and you see her - you see her like you’re seeing someone properly for the first time.
But you don’t see me.
